I don’t know about you but I became fascinated with pirates the first time I dressed in my pirate girl costume as a little girl. I remember watching the old Earl Flynn movies with my family on Sunday afternoons.  As I grew older, I looked forward to Halloween when my family and I would dress up in our pirate group Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat door to door.  I still remember the laughs (something like these pirate bloopers :) ) we got as a neighbor or relative opened the door to see all 6 of us dressed like we had just stepped off of a pirate ship!  My Mom and Dad loved spending times with us kids and “making memories” as she would say!

I am now building memories with my kids and husband.   We dressed up as pirates last year using the various Halloween costume ideas that I have collected here.  We had a BLAST!  My husband and I even won an award for the ‘Best Couple’ Halloween costumes at a community Halloween Party!

This is a perfect place to also find group Halloween costumes for your family so that you can dress your kids in pirate costumes and even buy one of those Captain Jack Sparrow Halloween costumes for that special man in your life.  And if you are throwing a Pirate theme party, this is the perfect site to shop!

Here is some other good information about the female Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley. I have included a video and transcript below the video so the you can follow along!…

Grace O’Malley, The Pirate Queen

Warrior Woman Pirate -with Lucy Lawless narrating

Along the formidable west coast of Ireland the legend of Grace O’Malley (female pirate) stands out like a freak wave! Born into a warring land of clan rivalries, and the lawlessness of the high seas, Grace blew away the notion of a woman’s place in the 16th century and taught the boys a lesson at their own game.

She was a mother, a lover, and a gambler who led her hardened warriors into battle taking on the might of Queen Elizabeth and the ambitions of the English empire. But the self righteous kind of men who could not cut her down in life cheaply wrote her out of history after her death. This is the true story of Grace O’Malley…one of the greatest leaders and clan warriors Ireland has ever known. You couldn’t make her up if you tried!

Here in county Mayo on the West coast of Ireland, folklore tells the story of a woman sea captain and clan leader by the name of Grace O’Malley. As the legend goes, she was a fearsome beautiful women who could as easily seduce a man as dispose of him with her sword. The so called “Pirate Queen” commanded an intensely loyal force of fighting men and at the helm of her galleys gave even the English navy a run for their money.

The most amazing thing about Grace O’Malley is that she really existed and the truth is even better than the legend. Her life long rival Queen Elizabeth the First of England became fascinated with reports of this infamous women pirate also called “Chief Commander and Director of Thieves and Murderers at Sea”. Grace made a lasting impression on her enemies at least those who lived to write about it.

Ann Chambers, Biographer narrates…”It is quite an irony of history that Grace OMalley’s factual records should have been written by her presumed enemies the English. If from all the military men who came to conquer her country that the story, the factual story, of Grace O’Malley is written in the dispatches sent back to court and back to England during these disturbed times. Imprisoned almost in that was the real story of Grace O’Malley. So really in affect, she and we would have to thank her enemies that they at least wrote something about her otherwise she would have been totally lost to history.”

(Lucy Lawless continues): To say that it was unusual for a girl to become a great pirate sea captain, warrior and clan leader in the male dominated world of Irish chieftains is the understatement of the 16th century. It was simply unheard of. But Grace O’Malley immortalized in Irish folklore as ‘Grainne Mhaol’ was a stubborn girl pirate. Born in about 1530 she loved the ocean and idolized her father Dubhdarra “Black Oak” O’Malley the fiercely independent chieftain of the O’Malley clan. Under Black Oaks watchful eye Grace learned every nuance of her uncharted home waters of Clew Bay a wild an remote area on the west coast of Ireland that the O’Malley family had laid claim to for over a thousand years. Grace was dead set on a life of adventure her imagination stirred by her father’s stories of far away lands and daring O’Malley exploits at sea.

At the age of 12 or 13, Grace’s fanciful childhood notions came to a head. She was nearing an age when a chieftains daughter must do her duty and marry a suitable clan leader. As far as her parents were concerned, the more richer and powerful the better. But Grace couldn’t care less about marriage. Her only love was for the sea. As folklore recounts, her father Black Oak was about to sail off for a long journey and Grace demanded that she was old enough to go with him. True enough if she was a boy but childhood imagination was one thing, the idea of a young woman going to sea was another and her parents forbade her to go. But the idea of spending her life cooped up in a drafty castle while less able men went off and had their fun never caught on with Grace and she plotted her first of many rebellions. Little did she know that she would be leading her clan into the approaching storm of Irish history! The fight of a lifetime against the English empire as it tried to bring her Gaelic world to its knees.

Throughout her life, Grace would dismiss the challenges of powerful men who wanted to put her in her place. But defying her father was different…he was the one man that she needed to help her become the woman she wanted to be. Folklore underlines this crucial point in her life when Grace stowed away on Black Oak’s ship and comes out of hiding when they are too far out to sea to turn back.

Ann Chambers, Biographer narrates… “The fact that she was a daughter and her father allowed her to really have her head if you like and do what came naturally for her, I think speaks volumes about him.  Grace had one half-bother called “Donal of the Pipes”. Now that can be translated two ways. He was either musically inclined or he rather liked the wine from Spain which came in pipes a little too much. He certainly wasn’t no mariner. It was Grace went seafaring. Grace O’Malley’s father was prepared to allow his daughter to really become his son because that is part and effect what Grace O’Malley did.”

(Lucy Lawless continues): Black Oak allowed Grace to follow her instints and go to sea. But back at home, he must have talked some sense into her. Business was business and at the age of about 16, Grace was married off to her first husband Donal O’Flaherty the next in line to be Chieftain of the O’Flaherty clan.

Nicknamed “Donal of the Battles” Grace’s new husband was all brawn and no brains. You can only imagine how she felt playing the homemaker while he went out and played warlord. But Grace stuck by him for eight years and bore him three children before he was conveniently killed in a squabble with the neighbors. Leaving a way for Grace, a natural born leader, to take command.

Grace saw beyond the blood-feuds amongst rival clans over land and cattle. She had a bigger plan. From her family stronghold on Clare Island with its commanding position over Clew Bay, she began building up the O’Malley empire by sea. Evidently, Grace was already superseding Donal as a leader before he died. Most telling of all was that the clansmen serving under Donal, stuck with Grace after his demise. How is it that this young woman commanded such loyalty from these hardened men?

Ann Chambers, Biographer narrates… “Grace O’Malley had to have something special. She had to be braver than the men she lead otherwise they wouldn’t have a agreed to be led by her. She had to be successful at her business. She had to be successful as a part time pirate… as a sea trader… as a mariner. If she wasn’t successful, she couldn’t keep a crew of 200 men. She had to be successful…she had to pay them!”
