Imagine paring one of the above sexy costumes with a mens pirate costumes. My husband and I won a local award with the costumes we bought! People ask me every year where I got the beautiful pirate outfit that was the talk of the community for months after the party. I was so comfortable in it. I was worried that I would not be but it fit me perfectly….I am so glad I bought them. My husband was very pleased with his. He said the pirate boots that we bought separately took some time to get use to (a tennis shoe man through and through! ) but said they weren’t uncomfortable.
When I was doing research on these sexy pirate’s, I came across a love story about a famous Irish female pirate named Grace O’Malley. Here is a romantic story about her life and times. I have included a video and transcribed it for you so that you can either read it or watch the video!
Grace O’Malley Pt. 2 (you will find the first part on the front page)
She had to be successful. She had to pay them (her male pirates).
The English administrators in Ireland were firmly entrenched in the main port of Galway City and squeezing high taxes from the O’Malley shipping trade. Up the coast in Clew Bay, Grace was about to become a thorn in the side of the all powerful English navy.
Grace began extracting fees from the increasing traffic of merchant ships under English protection sailing through O’Malley territory. Her great advantage was her knowledge of the unusual geography of Clew Bay. With over three hundred islands it is a maze of hidden inlets and narrow channels, the inner bay is shallow and in a rapid change in depth from high to low tide. The submerged sandbars and rocks became death traps for ships who dared to take on Grace in her home waters.
Grace had several large ocean-going galleys in her fleet but one of the most effective weapons amongst the islands were the smaller locally built work boats. In these quick and highly maneuverable sailing craft, Grace and her men would attack in numbers. Lying in wait, Grace would pounce on the larger less maneuverable ships like hornets swarming over their larger prey.
The English who considered all of the ocean the property of Queen Elizabeth called Grace’s activities piracy. Grace saw it as the family rite and the O’Malley trade was booming. She was quickly earning a reputation among rival English captains as a “Chief Director and Commander of Thieves and Murders at Sea”. Grace’s father Black Oak died when she was in her late 20′s and his daughter, already Commander of the fleet and a mother of three, staked her claim to take his place as Chieftain.
Ann Chambers, Biographer narrates…”In terms of becoming a Chieftian in Gaelic Ireland, no women could become a Chieftain. But Grace O’Malley simply took what was denied her by law and she said, Well I am a Chieftain. I have earned my right to be a Chieftain and if the law doesn’t like it then that’s tough on the law.”
Lucy Lawless continues: Grace was excelling in a man’s world. She fought with them and went to sea with them for months on end. But it would be a mistake to think that she was just living a man’s life. There were many sides to Grace and some of them were all women.
Ann Chambers, Biographer narrates…”The feminine side of Grace O’Malley is very interesting. We know for a fact that she had at least one lover in her life and there was a suggestion that she may have had and illegitimate child. It was a very liberal society in many respects. The Christian ethos here was interpreted in a totally different way than was intended by the Roman church. Everybody gave it a very wide interpretation in their own personal lives. She is very much part of her culture and part of her background and I don’t see any reason why she would not have availed to have a relationship outside of marriage if it suited and when it suited her own purposes.”
Lucy Lawless continues: Legend fills in the details of one of Grace’s romantic conquests. She had word of a ship that had floundered off of Akel Head in a storm. Setting out with her men they scoured the coast looking for spoils of the wreck that had washed up among the rocks. Grace came across a nearly drowned man, a foreigner by the name of Hugh de Lacy thought to be the son of a wealthy merchant. Grace decided that he was worth salvaging. Taking Hugh back to Clare Island she nursed him back to health and they became lovers.
Ann Chambers, Biographer narrates…”So you have Grace O’Malley very much as a woman enjoying really the fulfillment of her woman-hood to its nth degree. In a way, she was really a fully rounded human being when you think of it. She had both sides to her, a male and a female side and really, I suppose, enjoyed both to the fullest extent.”
Lucy Lawless continues: I am sure that Hugh couldn’t believe his luck falling into the arms of a formidable woman like Grace. Unfortunately their passion was short lived. Just a few months into their affair Hugh fell victim to inner tribal feuding. One day Hugh was out hunting on the mainland when men from a rival clan, the MacMahons, stocked him down and ambushed him. Grace was devastated. The MacMahons were about to feel her wrath. She immediately hunted down and killed the men responsible for Hughe’s death. But still, she was not satisfied. Gathering her warriors she set sail to the MacMahons’ stronghold at Doona in Black Sod Bay to the South and attacked their castle. Raiding among rival clans for castles, land and cattle was common place. The idea of Ireland as a country didn’t exist in this feudal world.
Because she was a woman, Grace was constantly tested by her rivals but they underestimated her at their peril. She routed the MacMahons and installed her followers in her castle earning a new knick-name “The Dark Lady of Doona”. Grace was reaching the height of her power. Grace was the consummate underdog and securing her little empire was a fight every step of the way. Weapons expert Martin Hullihand gave me a hands-on demonstration of Grace’s favorite tools of the trade.
Lucy: So Martin, how’s your guts, man? So do you think that Grace could have held her own with a sword.
Martin: Oh yeah, no doubt about it. She was trained at an early age to use these weapon and then she’d be good. Probably put some men to shame as well.
Lucy: And she fought with two swords?
Martin: Yeah, most of the warriors of that period it was fine. Used together, they were lethal.
Lucy: These are much lighter and shorter than the swords that I have used.
Martin: Yes, they were ideal for fighting from the large ships where you don’t have a lot of space to maneuvering in combat. Inside castles fighting are much easier the shorter the lighter the weapon. And if they’re guerrilla tactics in forests and bogs , you don’t want to be treading around with a great big heavy weapon on you… small weapons… light weapons were ideal.
Lucy: If it is not about brute strength then what did this female pirate woman need?
Martin: Speed and agility and a little bit of common sense. Not so much standing toe-to-toe hacking your opponent down. Getting the opening… getting the knife in… getting the sword in… killing… getting out quick…that is what it was all about.

Those female pirate costumes are the sexiest I’ve seen in a long time online. Can’t wait to see my wife in one of those. I hope to see a few of them around at some of the Halloween parties I’ll attend. Great info about pirates in general and about female pirates in particular. Great site!

Be still my heart… This is like pirate porn! I didn’t even know that female pirates existed, but I hope to be overtaken by a boatload of them one day soon. Until then, I will have to settle with a costume for my wife…Who knew?
These remind me of a concert I went to two nights ago. It was a full on pirate fest for the band Swashbuckle. Those pirates rocked! The other bands were more viking metal style and they rocked!
Hail to the hook! Now I know were to come back and what site to recommend for my event costumes. Thanks!
Oh..this particular outfit is extremely alluring. The idea appears to be hot with regard to somebody who is being dressed in this one. It likely to be considered a head-turner outfit regarding Halloween and also most likely not a terrifying one however a breathtaking attractive ideal for ladies.
